Do you have ANY idea just how many times I’ve been asked “how to make money on Facebook”?
*face palm*
I am sooooo tired of that question. Why? Because it doesn’t freakin’ happen!
See, with the advent and meteoric rise of social media, IMers were ultra-quick to hop on the bandwagon and start pumping out bullshit courses along the lines of “How to Make $100k on Facebook This Year!” This has marketers everywhere thinking that Facebook is that untapped goldmine where riches abound and all they have to do to get their share is to stick their hand in the cookie jar.
Ain’t. Gonna. Happen.
Listen, I’m not saying you *can’t* make money on social media – because there are definitely ways people have made social media profitable. Experienced PPC marketers have mastered Facebook ads for driving tons of cheap traffic. Business and execute types have probably connected with potential colleagues on LinkedIn and struck deals. And Twitter has probably helped people create a few new fanboys.
But the thing is that for every potential way to create wealth with social media, there are a bunch of lies and half-truths out there floating around as well.
The worst is Facebook fan pages. Don’t even get me started on how everybody and their brother has a damn Facebook fan page. (There are a few instances in which they’re a good idea…but 99% of the time, they’re just not needed.)
All that said – does that mean social media is stupid and has no place in your business.
HELL NO.
The issue is that most people take the COMPLETE wrong approach to social media in their business, and treat it as if it’s some sorta get-rich-quick scheme that’s gonna put cash in their pocket now…when they should be using social media to look YEARS on down the road.
There is one guy who totally gets it right, though – Gary Vaynerchuk.
Gary did a keynote speec at the Inc 500 Seminar in 2011 and talked about this very topic. His speech is below.
It’s long (just over an hour), but you would be WELL-SERVED to sit down and watch the whole thing. It’s really gonna open your mind to how social media truly should be used.
